Dr. Kevin Groot Lipman, NKI-AVL

Bio
Kevin Groot Lipman is a technical physician at the NKI-AVL where he focuses on AI implementation in the clinical workflow. Moreover, he develops such AI models for automatically detecting and measuring tumor volume in CT scans, of which one clinically is implemented at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Recently, he started his own research line in visual foundational models for radiology, with the goal of extracting powerful features out of radiological images to improve the diagnostic capabilities of AI models.

Presentation
Five decades ago a small experiment of two oncologist changed the way we treat cancer by giving rise to the current response evaluation criteria. In this presentation, we take the audience on a journey from that particular experiment to the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the field of lung cancer. We will touch upon the ways AI can improve the way we measure tumors compared to the current RECIST criteria by automatically analyzing the entire tumor burden in each scan, giving a clear overview of the response to treatment to doctors and patients. With such a paradigm switch to volumetric followup, it might be time to think about new response criteria to guide treatment decisions..
